Board Preparation

GL format is usually a multiple choice assessment with 50 questions. You are given 50 minutes to answer the questions. They are mainly based around the curriculum content reached during the early part of Year 6.

CEM assessments are online and are non-adaptive, meaning that all students will be asked the same questions in the same order. They are able to go back and change or fill in questions they missed out.

Frequently Asked Questions (11 Plus)
The 11+ is an entrance exam for grammar and selective schools in the UK, taken by students in Year 6 (aged 10-11). It tests Maths, English and sometimes Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
While based on the National Curriculum, the questions are more challenging in their wording and complexity.
The exam helps determine a student’s suitability for a more academic school environment, and successful results can lead to admission to competitive schools.
Most parents start preparing their child in year 4 to ensure they have enough time to cover all of the topics, practice challenging questions and complete practice papers.
As grammar and selective school entrance exams are challenging and extremely competitive, it can be very beneficial to have external help and guidance. That being said, it is not essential for a child to have tuition. If tuition is not an option for you, we provide resources specifically targeting schools of your choice. Click here to see which resources are best for your child.
You can help your child prepare at home by completing practice papers and focusing on areas they are struggling in. We also recommend focusing on expanding their vocabulary through reading or learning.
The main difference between a grammar school and an independent school lies in funding and admissions.
Grammar schools are state-funded schools that offer free education and select students based on academic ability, usually through an entrance exam like the 11 Plus. These schools follow the national curriculum and are part of the public education system.
Independent schools, on the other hand, are privately funded through tuition fees and donations. They are not bound by the national curriculum, allowing more flexibility in teaching approaches and subject choices. Admissions are typically based on their own entrance exams and interviews.
The number of 11+ schools you can apply for depends on the region and the specific schools’ application rules. For state-funded grammar schools, you can typically apply to as many as you wish, provided they are within commuting distance or you’re willing to relocate. Each school may have its own entrance exam and admissions criteria, so multiple applications might require sitting different tests.
If you’re considering independent schools that also use 11+ exams, you can apply to multiple schools as well, but each will have its own process, often involving interviews and additional assessments. Always check the specific schools’ requirements for deadlines and entrance procedures.
If your child is unsuccessful with the 11+, there are still plenty of great options. Many students thrive in comprehensive schools, which don’t require entrance exams and offer a wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities. Independent schools are another option, though they typically have their own admissions process, which may include interviews or tests.
You could also consider re-sitting the exam at a later stage for a 12+ or 13+ entry. Additionally, focusing on private tuition to strengthen areas of weakness can help your child build confidence and prepare for future academic challenges. Lastly, some grammar schools offer appeals if you believe your child was close to passing.
Surrey is home to several top-performing schools, both independent and grammar. Some of the most sought-after grammar schools include Tiffin School and Tiffin Girls’ School in Kingston, known for their academic excellence. Nonsuch High School for Girls and Wallington County Grammar School, both in nearby Sutton, are also highly regarded.
Among independent schools, Guildford High School, City of London Freemen’s School, Epsom College, and Hampton School consistently rank highly for academic achievement and offer excellent facilities. King’s College School in Wimbledon, though just outside Surrey, is another prestigious option often considered by Surrey families. All these schools maintain rigorous entry standards and offer exceptional education.
