Guildford High School Private Tutors

Guildford High School uses the CEM test. The assessment consists of verbal, numerical and non-verbal exercises.

Registration for Year 7 entry is open at any time, but to sit the entrance exam, applications must be submitted by 1st November before the intended year of entry. A £180 non-refundable fee applies.

With around 100 places available, approximately 40 go to current students, while the remaining spots are offered to new applicants. Admission is highly selective, based on an entrance exam, interview, and school references. Interviews, including activity sessions, take place in early January.

The CEM test consists of:

• Verbal Reasoning (VR): This focuses on vocabulary, comprehension, and logical thinking using words. Example topics: synonyms, antonyms, close passages, and word pair relationships.
• Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR): Assesses the ability to analyse and solve problems using visual information. Example topics: pattern recognition, spatial awareness, and sequences of shapes
• Numerical Reasoning (Maths): Tests mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Example topics: arithmetic, word problems, and logical number patterns.

It is extremely important for your child to have a high understanding of the different maths and English topics that could come up. Yes, Guildford School offers Academic & Music Scholarships at 11+, each worth up to 5% of fees.  

• Academic Scholarships – Awarded based on entrance assessment and interviews. All applicants are automatically considered; no separate exam is required.  
• Music Scholarships – Available to students meeting academic entry requirements and Distinction level playing. Auditions assess both achievement and potential, with expectations of Grade 4-5 on the principal instrument. Additional tests include sight-reading, aural assessments, and an interview.
