About Tiffin School

Tiffin School is a highly successful selective grammar school for boys aged 11-18, based in Kingston upon Thames. The school is known for its excellent academic results and for encouraging students to become confident, independent learners.

As well as strong academics, Tiffin offers a wide range of activities, including sport, music, drama, debating, clubs, and societies. This gives students the chance to explore their interests and develop skills beyond the classroom.

With high expectations, strong support, and a focus on personal growth, Tiffin School helps students prepare for GCSEs, A Levels, university, and future success.

Which 11+ Plus Exam Board does Tiffin School use?

Tiffin School uses their own exam board for 11+ examinations.

What is the 11+ admission process for Tiffin School?

To apply for Tiffin School, parents need to register their child for the entrance test through the school’s website. You will also need to complete your Local Authority’s secondary school application form and include Tiffin School as one of your chosen schools.

The entrance process is split into two stages.

Stage 1
The first stage usually includes multiple-choice tests in English and Maths. These are designed to assess a child’s core reading, problem-solving, and mathematical skills.

Stage 2
Children who perform well enough in Stage 1 are invited back for the second stage. This normally includes written English and Maths papers. In Maths, students need to show their working clearly. In English, students may be asked to complete comprehension and writing tasks.

After both stages are complete, places are offered according to Tiffin School’s admissions criteria and each child’s performance in the entrance tests.

What is the 11+ exam format like for Tiffin Girls’?

The Tiffin School 11+ has two stages. Both stages focus on English and Maths.

Stage 1
Stage 1 is made up of English and Maths tests. These are multiple-choice papers, and answers are marked on a separate answer sheet.

The English paper tests skills such as reading carefully, understanding vocabulary, making inferences, and answering questions accurately under timed conditions.

Stage 2
Boys who do well enough in Stage 1 are invited to sit Stage 2.

Stage 2 also tests English and Maths, but the papers are written rather than multiple-choice. This means students need to write their answers clearly. In Maths, they may need to show their working. In English, some questions may require longer written answers.

Preparing for Tiffin School 11 Plus (11+) Entrance Exam

The best 11+ preparation starts with strong topic knowledge.

Practice papers are an important part of 11+ preparation. They help children become familiar with the exam format, question styles, and timed conditions. However, practice papers are most effective when a child already understands the key Maths and English topics that may come up.

Reading is also a huge part of 11+ success. The more children read, the more they develop their vocabulary, comprehension skills, inference, spelling, grammar, and confidence with unfamiliar texts. Regular reading can make a big difference, especially when children are faced with challenging passages in the exam.

Without strong topic knowledge and regular reading, children can quickly find papers overwhelming. They may struggle to break down questions, choose the right method, understand vocabulary, or work out where they are going wrong.

That is why Sparkling Minds Resources focuses on teaching 11+ topics clearly and step by step before students move on to exam-style practice. Our online 11+ course includes:

Detailed teaching videos
Topic posters
Multiple worksheets per topic
SEN-friendly explanations and resources
Practice papers to apply what they have learned

For children who need extra support, our bespoke 11+ tutoring can also help target gaps, build confidence, improve exam technique, and teach effective strategies.

This way, students are not just completing papers for the sake of it. They are building the knowledge, reading skills, and confidence needed to approach the 11+ properly.

Does Tiffin School have a catchment area?

Yes, Tiffin School has a priority area. Boys who live within 10km of the school are usually given priority when places are being offered.

However, children still need to do well in the entrance tests. Living within the priority area does not guarantee a place, as Tiffin School is very competitive and places are offered based on the school’s admissions rules.

How are places offered after the 11+ for Tiffin School ?

After the entrance tests, boys are ranked using their English and Maths results. Places are then offered according to Tiffin School’s admissions rules.

There are approximately 180 spaces for year 7 entry.

Priority is given to boys who meet specific admissions criteria, including those with an EHCP naming the school, looked-after or previously looked-after children, and some pupils eligible for Pupil Premium.

Most places are then offered to boys who live within the 10km priority area and achieve the highest scores. A small number of places may also be available for boys who show strong aptitude in sport or music.

This means that both exam performance and the school’s admissions criteria affect whether a child is offered a place.

What if my child is not successful in the 11+ for Tiffin School?

If your child is not successful in the 11+, they cannot usually retake the exam for another chance at Year 7 entry.

Tiffin School’s main entry points are Year 7 and Sixth Form. Places in Years 8–11 are very rare, as students who join in Year 7 usually stay at the school as they move up through the year groups.

Parents can apply for an in-year place if a vacancy becomes available, but children who sat the Year 7 entrance test and did not reach the required cut-off score are not usually eligible to be reconsidered for Years 8–11.

Another possible entry point is Sixth Form, where students can apply again for Year 12 if they meet the school’s entry requirements.
